Grendelyn is named for our very first rat. We had a beige rat with a crooked "z" tail when we were in college that I named Grendel, for the monster in the old story BEOWULF. He wasn't very scary. He was our baby and we took him everywhere. He sired one litter of babies with his sister, and albino named Pockets. They were all 7 black with white markings and black hoods. He lived 2 years.
When we went to the Pet store, I knew I could sell my husband on this little beige girl. I'd already handled her, and knew she was very sweet and social. How could we not name her after Grendel?
If you look at Grendelyn's photos, you can see her tail curves up over her back or to the side. Why is that? She has a case of Treadwheel Tail. TTS is caused by rats who spend too much time on the tread wheel in their cage, and that would be our Grendelyn. She's probably deformed for life, but we still love her!
